“加油”，是一個在國內(nèi)被人們廣泛使用用來為其他人鼓勁助威或表示支持的短語，目前已被收錄入最新版本的牛津英語字典。“加油”這個短語從字面上理解就是給某些引擎機器加入汽油，而中國人在比賽或競賽中常常大聲喊出這個短語來鼓勵參賽者。牛津字典給“加油”的定義中提到這個短語的發(fā)音來自粵語“ga yau”，并且提到香港英語中最早使用add oil表示加油可追溯到1964年。
