Wuhan Yangsigang Yangtze River Bridge is the world’s longest double-deck highway suspension bridge,the first double-deck highway bridge across the Yangtze River,and the tenth Yangtze River bridge in Wuhan,China.The double-deck,two-way,twelve-lane bridge has a total length of 4,130 meters,with its main span reaching 1,700 meters.Its main span is ranked the second longest of all bridges in the world,and ranked the first longest in double-deck bridges.
The bridge also boasts the greatest carrying capacity and the most functions for use in the world.The upper deck is a two-way,six-lane expressway,with a designed speed of 80 km per hour.Both sides of the bridge are flanked with pedestrian passageways with a width of 2 meters each for sightseeing,and 16 tourist spots are set over the bridge.As a two-way,six-lane driveway,with a designed speed of 60 km per hour,the lower deck is designed with a non-motorized vehicle lane and a pedestrian passageway with a width of 2.5 meters and 1.5 meters respectively.It is the first time a non-motorized vehicle lane has been designed on a Yangtze River bridge,and the upper deck forms protection for pedestrians on the lower deck against rain.
The two anchorage foundations of the bridge are circular underground diaphragm walls,both measuring 98 meters in diameter.Their grooving depth is 59 meters and 66 meters respectively,with the total plane area equal to the size of 16 basketball courts.The size of the anchorage foundations are the largest among all bridges of its type in the world.During the construction of Wuhan Yangsigang Yangtze River Bridge,super large caisson technology was applied for the first time in the world to the local super-thick and super-hard clay stratum.Furthermore,the development and application of high-strength steel wire of galvanized aluminum alloy with 6.2 mm in diameter and 1960 MPa tensile strength of the main cable of the suspension bridge was employed for the first time,and the designed strain of the bridge’s single main cable is 65,000 tons,enough to hold an aircraft carrier.This is also the first time that a new structure of fully-welded steel truss stiffening girders was adopted and the new technology of whole-section construction using thousand-ton fully-welded steel truss stiffening girders was planned and implemented successfully.(Translation: Wang Wen)
