My name is Shelby， and Im shy. When Im at the grocery store， people say， “Hello，” and “How old are you？” Even though Im six years old， my face gets hot.

Mom says， “Shes shy.” That makes me feel worse.

At Vinnies Diner， the waiter says， “Whats your name？” I just stare1 at my plate.

But I am. And at birthday parties， kids shout， “Come play Pin the Tail on the Donkey， Shelby！”

I just shake2 my head. The other parents say， “She doesnt want to play right now.”

But I really do like to play. Everybody always talks about how shy I am， but there are other things to know about me.

Today I swam a whole lap without stopping. And last week I beat3 Kyle in a race around the track4. Kyles the fastest boy in my class！

My brother Ben is never shy. Hes never afraid.

At the grocery store， he talks to everyone. He says， “Hi！” and “Im five years old！”

At Vinnies Diner， he orders his own food and he tells the waiter silly jokes.

And at birthday parties， he plays all of the games.

He wins most of them， too. “Hes so friendly！” everyone says. “Isnt he cute？”

“Isnt he annoying5？” I say to myself. Really， I just wish I wasnt so shy.

Today， we went to a Halloween party. I wore my superhero costume so I could feel brave6. But when we walked in， my face started burning. The butterflies in my tummy7 were beating their wings hard.

Ben grabbed8 my hand. He said， “Come on， Shelby！Lets get some punch9.” We walked through the crowd of kids together. Ben smiled at everyone. He talked to everyone， too.

“Shelby is the best swimmer！” Ben told Sam. I thought about swimming. I thought about the cool water and how， to me， swimming feels a little like flying.

“Shelby can run super fast，” Ben told Jimmy. I thought about running. I thought about how the wind blows my hair and my feet go thud thud10 thud on the ground.

Ben didnt tell anyone I was shy. And I was so busy thinking about the things I like to do that I wasnt thinking about being shy at all.

And you know what？ After a while， my face cooled off， and the butterflies in my tummy flew away.

I straightened11 my cape12 and stood up tall.

“I passed the swim test at school on my first try，” I told Sam.

“I can run the fastest in my class，” I told Jimmy.

I found that when I was thinking about something I love to do， I didnt feel so afraid. I felt brave—just like a superhero. I thought I might be the bravest kid on the whole planet.

我發(fā)現(xiàn)，當(dāng)我在思考自己喜歡做的事情時(shí)，我并沒(méi)有那么害怕。而是感到自己很勇敢——就像一個(gè)超級(jí)英雄。我以為我可能是整個(gè)星球上最勇敢的孩子。
