本詩(shī)選自莎士比亞的喜劇《愛(ài)的徒勞》，是在全劇結(jié)束時(shí)由一個(gè)名叫“冬天”的扮成貓頭鷹的丑角演唱的。本詩(shī)展現(xiàn)了一幅16世紀(jì)末英格蘭農(nóng)村冬季的民俗畫(huà)，一方面是寒風(fēng)瑟縮的冬景，另一方面是熱氣騰騰的場(chǎng)面，兩者形成對(duì)照，使冰雪寒冬充滿了蓬勃生機(jī)。
