"What's that?" my ten-year-old daughter, Genie, asked. She'd caught me laughing at apiece of flyer(傳單) i'd just opened. "Wake-up service: $2.50 for every call." At the bottom was aphone number and a drawing of an old phone, like the one my great-aunt Sara had owned 40years ago.

"Is that flyer funny?" Genie asked.

"Not really," I said. "It' s just out of fashion."

"What's a wake-up call?" She wondered. I explained how. before smartphones, peoplesometimes paid someone to wake them with a call.

"Who sent this flyer?" she asked.

"Probably someone older." I said. "and could use some money.

Her eyes lit up. "Can we order a wake-up?" she asked.

"We don 't need it," I picked it up and headed for the recycling bin (回收箱).

      "Waitf " she cried.

"I feel sorry for the wake-up man. if he needs some money," she said. "Can ' t we order?"

I looked at the flyer with the drawing and remembered, again my aunt Sara and her phone.Aunt Sara woulcl hold my hand, then reach for the phone, dialing (撥打) the number on thescreen. Holding the receiver between us. we'd tell the operator(電話接線員 ),

"We'd like to helpthe poor kids."

Now here was my own child. showing the same big heart I'd once been encouraged to have, and how could I refuse her? I googled the flyer's return address. The address belonged to a mancalled Raymond. He was in his mid-60s. We called him and, holding the receiver between us, theway Aunt Sara and I used to. told him we needed his services. "Great! " Raymond said in afriendly voice. clearly surprised at receiving an order from a child. When I asked how to pay the$2.50, he answered. "Mail a check."

Genie was happy all week. Friday night, I put the phone by her pillow so she could answerRaymond's call. She stayed in my bedroom and told me all about how he' d wished her a goodmorning and told her to have a great day, which she did.

Technology has made some things out of fashion. But there are still other t ungs the worldwill always require. In my busy daily life, I'd forgotten that for a moment. I guess I just needed awake-up call.
