電話用語(yǔ)也存在著文化習(xí)慣上的差異。如果不是住家電話,英美國(guó)家習(xí)慣上接電話的人先報(bào)自己?jiǎn)挝坏拿Q,而不是由打電話的人先問(wèn)。有些初學(xué)者喜歡在電話里說(shuō)I'm...;其實(shí),說(shuō)This is...speaking才符合習(xí)慣。同樣不宜問(wèn)對(duì)方Who are you? 而應(yīng)該說(shuō)May I ask who's speaking? 或Could I ask who I'm speaking to? 如果接電話的人正是你要找的人,對(duì)話可能是這樣的:
A:I wonder if I could speak to Mr.Ed wardSilver?
B:Speaking.
有人誤把speaking理解成“對(duì)方讓他說(shuō)話”,因而又重復(fù)說(shuō)I'd like to speak to Mr.Edward Silver。實(shí)際上speaking是This is Edward Silver's speaking的省略說(shuō)法。聽(tīng)到speaking后,應(yīng)該明白你要找的人正在和你交談,因而應(yīng)盡快進(jìn)入話題。
順便提一下,接電話的人若拿起電話不等對(duì)方開(kāi)口先報(bào)自己的電話號(hào)碼,他很可能是個(gè)英國(guó)人。
