Opera via the internet
Joan:
These days, when the novel coronavirus pneumonia has closed numerous public venues around the country, touring companies have decided against coming to Asia, and the government is encouraging people to stay home, what are opera and music lovers to do? This is a sad situation.Valery:
No one knows how long this health crisis will last, but fortunately we have the internet. These days, not only can we work from home, we can also stream music and video anytime we want, especially if the computer is attached to a good sound system.Joan:
Actually, I was going to suggest that opera lovers spend more time online.Five years ago in this column, I first recommended the Opera Platform website, a joint effort of the Creative Europe Program of the European Union (which provided half of its funding), ARTE (a French-German cultural television station) and Opera Europa (the professional association of European opera houses and festivals).Valery:
Opera Platform has now changed its name to Opera Vision, clearly wanting to stress the new vistas that it covers.Actually, this free service has expanded quite a bit since those early days. Now there are even more opera companies and festivals participating: at this point, the web project features a total of 29 partners from 17 countries.Joan:
What I find fascinating is that you no longer just passively “stream” an opera.Apart from hundreds of live performances that you can view, the website(www.operavision.eu) now offers many interactive games, along with incentives welcoming both young and old newcomers to the art form.Valery:
I went online and turned to the section “New to Opera?” and found two very amusing psychological tests: “Which famous soprano character are you?” and“Which famous tenor character are you?”Joan:
I tried the “soprano” test and found out I am Violetta (fromLa Traviata
)! Please do try, it’s so much fun! On the same page are plenty of short videos that summarize opera plots. There’s even a webpage that provides guidance to teachers and parents. These educational tips are thoughtful and concise, and I just discovered an inspiring and unique “opera karaoke” video!Valery:
If you click on https://operavision.eu/en/library/aus-spass-der-freude/opera-karaoke-pa-papa-pa-pa# you can sing along with Papageno and Papagena fromThe Magic Flute
.Joan:
All you have to do is immerse yourself in this website every day and you’ll become an opera expert in a month!
